Logo após o evento da imersão, recebi um telefonema de um cliente em meu celular e pela primeira vez não precisei delegar a tarefa de responder ao meu cliente imediatamente. Parece simples, mas com isso ganhei agilidade a autonomia no atendimento e para minha posição isto foi um grande ganho.

Meu chefe chegou à reunião de pauta do jornal e me perguntou se eu falava inglês. "Sim", respondi. "Então a partir de hoje você vai editar matérias internacionais", disparou ele. Hã? Foi o que pensei. Mas logo me empolguei com a novidade. E o desafio não era pequeno: era setembro de 2009, os Estados Unidos se agitavam numa eleição que se tornaria histórica, com a vitória de Barack Obama, e o Jornal da Globo, onde eu trabalhava naquele momento, preparava uma extensa cobertura do assunto, com reportagens especiais todos os dias. Os debates entre os candidatos e o dia da eleição em si foram as maiores provas de fogo. Era preciso ouvir e traduzir o que os personagens diziam, sempre correndo contra o tempo. E aí me dei conta de que eu havia voltado a estudar inglês na hora certa. Eu já era aluno do Wall Street havia 6 meses, e naquele desafio no Jornal da Globo percebi o quanto minhas habilidades de leitura e listening haviam evoluído. Grande motivação pra continuar estudando e aproveitando tudo o que o Wall Street me oferece. E eu tinha muitas outras motivações para praticar ainda mais o meu inglês. Além do que o trabalho me exige, estou arrumando as malas para minha primeira viagem à Europa. Alguma dúvida de que lá eu não vou querer nem saber do português?

Semana passada fiz uma viagem a negócios para a Irlanda e foi excelente para ajudar a desenvolver o meu inglês. Nunca tinha feito uma viagem inetrnacional antes e consegui me virar muito bem com tudo que aprendi na Wall Street. Era engraçado que durante estes dias eu lembrava muito de algumas coisas que tinha aprendido nas aulas e no laboratório, além de ter aprendido na prática outras expressões e aplicação de "phasal verbs" que não esquecerei mais! A experiência nos aeroportos por onde passei foi bem interessante, pois fiz uma lição no livro 1 do Upper Way que ensinava sobre todos os termos relacionados a viagens, aeroportos, etc! A comunicação com os Irlandeses foi excelente e fiquei bastante satisfeita em comprovar que todas estas horas de estudo na Wall Streer estão dando bons resultados.

Escolhi a WallStreet para desenvolver o "falar" em inglês, já possuía algum conhecimento de tantas idas e vindas em diferentes escolas, mas quando encontrei a Wall Street, definitivamente as coisas mudaram. Obtive um grande salto na fluência, mesmo não sendo fluente completamente, ainda tenho muito a aprender. Porém com este pequeno tempo na WS, sinto o aperfeiçoamento do meu inglês e tenho angariado mais atenção no meu trabalho, o que me possibilita coordenar um conference call semanal com alguns colegas de trabalho que moram no exterior e consequentemente possuem o inglês como língua nativa. Sem o inglês não poderia participar tão ativamente como participo de algumas decisões na empresa em que trabalho, mas especificamente no departamento que trabalho. Se em poucos meses já consigo muito, imagine quando terminar o curso. Agora sim, tenho chances de conseguir uma vaga para trabalhar no exterior.

In 2000, I lost my job and was looking for another one. Then I had two big opportunities to start a job in a multinational company, including the opportunity to work abroad. The problem were my English skills. I was able to read but I was bad at speaking, and the interview was in English, with a native English person, by phone. I lost these opportunities, so I realized that I needed to improve that skill, but I thought learning English was boring. Three years ago I started studying at Wall Street and I loved the method. Now I am working in an Indian Company. I’m participating in meetings in English and now I enjoy studying English.

I used to work in a company that was headquartered in Denver, USA. I frequently had occasions to work close to the Americans, but once I had a big challenge. A big project was taken place in Minas Gerais and many people from the State of M.G. Government were involved in it. From our side, a team of 5 American engineers and architects was indicated to develop the project. When the project started, they noticed that the communication was difficult due to the fact some people from MG team didnt speak English, and the American people didnt speak Portuguese as well. It could be a huge problem to the results of the project. So, as an employee from Brazil office, I was invited to take part in the team, and play the role of a "translator technician", helping both sides to understand and communicate properly to each other. I had the chance to use my skills as an architect, but what lead me to this opportunity were my skills in speaking English. I enjoyed a lot that opportunity, because it was very important to my professional and personal experience.

Em certa ocasião, a empresa em que eu trabalhava ia realizar auditoria internacional de qualidade e, para isso, um auditor inglês viria para fazer a auditoria de qualidade. Meus chefes (eu tinha 2 chefes - coordenador e supervisor da área), não tinham um inglês que fosse possível se comunicar fluentemente. Eu já tinha estudado durante 4 anos e tinha alguma fluência. Quando o auditor chegou, eu pude ir "aparecendo" em um processo que nem fui cogitado para acompanhar. Depois da auditoria os chefes me chamaram para uma reunião e agradeceram a "ajuda". Certamente, ganhei alguns pontos porque da lá em diante eu acompanhei todas as auditorias que aconteciam semestralmente, e também fui respnsável pela comunicação pré e pós auditoria via e-mail e telefone com o auditor.

I am a bank manager at Banco Real, in my work I don´t need to use English, but one day an American client needed help with his bank account and I helped him, as nobody else in my work could speak English. On the following day president of my company sent me an e-mail, thanked me and I got a promotion! I´m happy now and I come to study English because I know it can help me not only in my work but also in my life.

I decided to learn English because in my job it´s very important. I work in an international company and day by day I face many situations in which people speak only in English. Another reason to study English is because I am going to travel to the USA.

I started to study because I´m working at Hatch, a Canadian Engineering Consultancy. We do projects around the world. Mostly projects are done in English, and so is our communication. I needed to improve my English to do a better work and be able to (maybe) work in other countries. I chose Wall Street Institute because it´s near my job and it has a very flexible schedule.

I work in a Brazilian company that operates in twenty countries. I work in an international business. I intend to be a business woman and so I need to speak English, specially about real estate, to be ready to sign contracts and travel to International fairs. This is the moment! I intend to take an MBA course next year, and I´ll need to read articles in English. I know that to finish my MBA I´ll have a presentation in English and in Portuguese.

Por três vezes o inglês foi muito importante e até essencial na minha vida. Primeiro em 2004 quando fui enviada para representar a empresa onde trabalhava em uma viagem pela Austrália. O objetivo era conhecer a cadeia produtiva do algodão em lugares importantes neste mercado no país e fazer contatos para troca de conhecimento, tecnologia e exportação de parte da nossa produção para indústria têxtil local. Fazia parte de um grupo e por me comunicar em inglês tive contato mais próximo com produtores e compradores de algodão o que resultou o estreitamento das relações comerciais, uma posterior visita de uma cooperativa australiana na empresa e novas parcerias na troca de conhecimento e no aumento da exportação de nossa produção de algodão beneficiado. Uma segunda situação foi quando fui à Inglaterra em 2007. Morava na Itália na época e pra comemorar meu aniversário decidi conhecer Londres. Era uma viagem de uma semana e sem saber da dificuldade de entrar no país fui sem muitas preocupações. Na alfândega o responsável me fez várias perguntas e certamente não teria conseguido entrar sem respondê-las e provar que deveria retornar à Itália pra continuar um curso. Foi uma semana maravilhosa, estava sozinha e por falar a língua pude aproveitar muito mais das opções turísticas, conhecer pessoas nativas e de outros países no albergue em que me hospedei. A terceira foi em 2008 quando me mudei para Dublin na Irlanda. Também sozinha na ocasião posso assegurar que as coisas teriam sido muito mais difíceis. Já no segundo dia consegui trabalho de garçonete em um café – bar, obviamente por saber me expressar e entender o inglês. Uma grande e intensa experiência de vida. Bom, não é a toa que continuo a buscar o aprimoramento do meu conhecimento em inglês. Sou uma apaixonada por viagens, experiências internacionais e conhecer pessoas de diferentes culturas. Além disso, sei da importância da língua pra minha vida profissional. Nas três ocasiões, uma a trabalho, outra a turismo e a terceira morando e trabalhando num país de língua inglesa ter estudado e continuar me empenhado para melhorar, foi e tenho certeza que continuará sendo um grande diferencial de sucesso.

When I was in Toronto last year, my English wasn´t very good and of course a lot of communication misunderstandings happened. One of the best ones happened in my homestay. There was a Spanish friend of mine with whom I went out many times. And his English was worst than mine! One day I asked him were we were going at night and to me it was clear we were going to “Republic Night Club” at 9:00. And then I was at the club at 8:30 pm, but when he saw me he didn’t understand why I was waiting for him, and he asked me if I went out by myself. Then he told me he was taking a Canadian girl to a hotel. And then we understood each other. That’s a big example of a communication misunderstanding!
I work with computers, I´m a Developer Analyst and for me and everybody, English is very important. Basically English is important because almost everything is in English. All books, articles and researches are in English and we need to read it, so we need to know English. Not just it, but I need to write in English because my company is American and everything there is in English. Sometimes we need to talk to people from other countries, and of course we use English to communicate with them. But thinking about the knowledge of English in general in my work area, I can say that "English can make the different in your life", as the best companies will need professionals with this knowledge. I´d also like to leave in Canada and for this i really need to know English. Now English is more than a channel, it´s a channel of communication.

There was a time when I needed to understand a financial model to approve it, and it was in English. My knowledge about the language helped me to understand the logic of the model and give an opinion about it.When I left the results to my boss, he liked the analysis and congratulated me for my efforts! I don´t answer e-mails in English now, but I had some opportunities to do it in another company. Once there was a contract with a company from Netherland, totally written in English, and I helped the project manager to understand it and calculate the risks - with a business dictionary, of course!

I have many problems when I talk on the phone in English. I understand most parts of the conversation but I can’t express myself to tell the person exactly what I want to say and they always have problems to understand me. It’s embarrassing because I didn’t understand something and ask them to repeat. But they did not repeat once or twice, it’s like almost three or four times. Maybe more. My friends try to help me and I always need help cause I don’t know many words, so I try to answer by myself. If it’s very difficult I beg for help or use the Google translator to find the words that I don’t know. The worst part is when I need someone´s e-mail address and they try to spell it for me…please…if it’s difficult to understand the them talking, could can I understand them spelling?

I always wanted to learn English, first because I like it, and next because is it almost mandatory nowadays to get a job. Unfortunately, I didn´t have money to pay for an English school, so I started looking for a job in a school. I got a job at a school, but I didn´t have time to do the course! After that, I got another job in another English school, but again I couldn´t take classes because I didn´t have time. Then there was a possibility for me to learn Spanish, and I decided to try it until I could afford my English course. Then I started working in a Multinational Company and finally I had the opportunity to take English classes, as the company paid for us. I lef this job, but today, as I can speak English, I can pay for my own course, at Wall Street Institute!
